Editor’s note: The Fred Way Directory lists the Ralph Hicks as a gasoline powered sternwheel pleasure boat, originally named Albermatla, built in 1902. The owner was Captain Jeff Hicks, of Pine Bluff, AK, who only owned the boat for about ten years, when he died following injuries in a car accident. After that, the boat changed hands, finally to be acquired by the Kansas City Bridge Company, and cut down to a single deck for towing. Her demise came in 1944, when she was beached on the St. Louis wharf, and was subsequently dismantled.

If anybody can supply photos or additional info. on the Ralph Hicks, we will post it here.

DELTA QUEEN PASSENGER VESSEL FINALLY SOLD
By D.K. DuPont
6/27/2011

Xanterra Parks & Resorts has purchased the assets of Ambassadors International Inc., including the Delta Queen and Columbia Queen, for $39 million cash. U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware approved the sale in late May to the Greenwood Village, Colo.-based company that runs concessions and activities at national and state parks. The deal also includes Windstar Cruises. The two riverboats were part of Ambassadors money-losing Majestic America Line brand. The Delta Queen is leased under a bareboat charter as a hotel in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Columbia Queen, which is in Portland, Ore., was pledged as collateral with a credit card processor, according to regula- tory filings. Ambassadors had both on the market. Xanterra has made no decisions on the fate of either vessel, a spokesman said in early June. The Maritime Administration is trying to sell two other Majestic vessels, the American Queen and the Empress of the North. Ambassadors returned them to the Maritime Administration, which paid bondholders nearly $68 million. The American Queen is under contract for $15.5 million to a company led by John Waggoner, CEO of HMS Global Maritime based in New Albany, Ind. Waggoner earlier told WorkBoat he hoped to operate the 418′, 436-passenger vessel on the inland rivers next year. — D.K. DuPont

“When there used to be four thousand steamboats and ten thousand acres of coal-barges, and rafts and trading scows, there wasn’t a lantern from St. Paul to New Orleans, and the snags were thicker than bristles on a hog’s back; and now when there’s three dozen steamboats and nary barge or raft, Government has snatched out all the snags, and lit up the shores like Broadway, and a boat’s as safe on the river as she’d be in heaven. And I reckon that by the time there ain’t any boats left at all, the Commission will have the old thing all reorganized, and dredged out, and fenced in, and tidied up, to a degree that will make navigation just simply perfect, and absolutely safe and profitable.” – Mark Twain

EXCERPT

Ambassadors International Inc., wrapped up its bankruptcy case last week by selling its assets — including the riverboat Delta Queen — to TAC Cruise, an affiliate of Xanterra Holding Corp, which runs concessions and activities at national and state parks.

The court approved a $39 million cash offer by TAC over an earlier bid by Whippoorwill Associates Inc., White Plains, N.Y., a private investment firm with a 22 percent stake in Seattle-based Ambassadors. Whippoorwill had agreed to provide $10 million in new financing under a debtor-in-possession credit arrangement.
